Decision support for the management of invasive pest species
A specific research focus on the management of invasive pest species such as Eldana saccharina Walker in sugarcane and water hyacinth. Methodology used to model and understand pest population dynamics under different control strategies, such as biological control, sterile insect releases, and refugia planning in Bt sugarcane, include partial differential equation modelling, agent-based simulation, cellular automaton. Once a better understanding of the possible cause and effect of different control strategies has been gained by means of mathematical and simulation modelling, in-field experimentation can be done in a smarter, more targeted manner. Decision support for healthcare operations management
We apply operations research techniques to a wide range of healthcare applications. Examples include resource allocation during an epidemic, the delivery of vaccines using drone technology, the fair scheduling of doctors in an emergency department, operations planning of local clinics, and the routing of mobile clinics in rural areas. Methodology used to find improvement for healthcare operations include soft OR and workshops with decision-makers, discrete-event simulation, differential equation modelling and optimisation techniques such as mixed-integer programming.
